  • Maris Stella Alumni Association & Department of English organised a guest lecture for PG English students by Dr. Afeera Khanam, English Instructor, University of Jeddah, Khulais, Saudi Arabia  on the topic ‘Teaching and Learning English as a Second Language: Strategies’ on 31st  July 2019. 75 PG Students attended it.
  • Maris Stella Alumni Association(MSAA) organized an invited lecture for PG & UG English Literature students on 3rd August,2019. The Resource Person was Dr.Afeera Khanam, an alumna herself, who has been working as an English Instructor, University of Jeddah, Khulais,Saudi Arabia. She dealt with Women’s Writings throwing light on African American women. She drew examples from various writers and focused on Alice Walker’s Color Purple which is a novel discussing several issues like feminism, socio cultural problems in Africa, racism, gender discrimination, queer human relations-to name a few.
  • Maris Stella Alumni Association(MSAA) and the PG Department of English, Maris Stella College, Vijayawada, organised a special guest lecture on the topic ‘Reading Skills’ by Ms. V. Vishnu Vandana Devi, Associate Professor of English, Vijaya Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences for Women, Vijayawada, on 29.08.19

   Seminars,Workshops, Conferences & FDPS
  • Management has organized a Faculty development Programme – ‘Beyond Teaching-the Joy and Passion of Being a Faculty’ for the faculty who have below 5 years of experience   on 3rd June 2019. The Resource person, Mr. Stephen Chinaswamy, CEO, Strides Consulting Inc., Chennai emphasized self-esteem & how to nurture  it in students in  his sessions. Fifty five faculty attended it.
  • Management has also organized a Faculty development Programme – ‘Teacher as a Facilitator of Learning and Leadership & Ideal Team Players’ for all the faculty on 5th & 6th June 2019 by Dr. Mercy Pushpalatha, Programme Consultant, South Asia, United Faculty Board. She dealt with outcome based education. Another Resource Person  Mrs. Jaya Abraham, Partner with AJ ventures, Mumbai, briefed about vision and mission of an Individual.
  • A Two Day Workshop cum faculty development program and capacity building has been conducted on 29th & 30th July 2019. The resource person was Dr. Sandhya Tiwari, Director CELT, Palamuru University and 50 Faculty members participated in it.
  • A Three Day Workshop on ‘Constructive Alignment and Outcome Based Education’ has been organized by IQAC, Maris stella College in collaboration with United Board from 21st to 23rd Oct 2019. Forty nine faculty members of the institution  and four from other institutions have been equipped with the new notions of education and Digital Technology-Assisted Pedagogy by three eminent professors from Christ University , Bengaluru- Dr. Suparnakar, Dept. of Sociology and Social Work, Dr. Swetha Mukherjee Dept. of English and Dr. Vinay, Dept. of Computer Science.

  • Dr. Satya Sudha presented a paper on “Redefining Human Status: A Comparative Study of Sarabhai’s Well of the People and Enoch’s The Village Well.” in the International Conference on “Advances in Visual Communication, Library & Translation Studies in World Literature” organized by Andhra Loyola College on Oct 24th  & 25th , 2019.
  • Ms. L.M.R. Swaroopa Rani presented a paper titled ‘New Perspectives in English Language Teaching’ in the International Conference on “Advances in Visual Communication, Library & Translation Studies in World Literature’  organized by Andhra Loyola College on Oct 24 &25, 2019.
  •  Ms B. Santhi Sree, Dept. of  English, Ms. M. Archana , Dept. of Chemistry and Ms. R. Tulasi , Dept. of Maths, P.G attended a Faculty Development Programme on “ Recent Trends in Teaching -Learning Methodologies Using ICT in Higher Education Institutions from 24th to 30th  oct, 2019 at Sir C.R. Reddy College, Eluru.

  • Dr. K. Sandhya presented her poems published in the anthology "The Vase" in Hunter International Poetry Festival on 18&19/09/2019. 
  • Under the guidance of Dr. K. Sandhya,  Dr. Afeera Khanam   and  Dr. K. Surekha Rani   were awarded Ph.D from ANU. One scholar submitted her Ph. D. Dissertation to JNTUH.

              Students Fests, Events & Competitions 

  • Eight students from PG I & II year English adapted short stories from "Amaravathi through Ages" written by Sri Sai Papineni to the stage during the book launch in Cafe Coffee Day, Vijayawada,in an intercollegiate book reading session on 24/09/2019  at 4pm"To Cap it All" and "Sweet Apple " were enacted by the following students: Sirajunnisa, Stefi Sharon Angel, Preethi Joseph, Sai Deepthi B,  Sowmya V, Jhansi lakshmi P, Santhi Mrunalini D from II MA  and  Harshini G from I MA. Sri V. Veerabhadrudu, IAS, Director, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan was the Chief Guest and he appreciated the students and had a literary interaction with them.
 Observation of Important Days, National Events and National Leaders’      Birthdays-
  • NSS Golden Jubilee has been celebrated in a big way in Maris Stella College on 24th Sep, 2019. In the college auditorium, a Photo Exhibition has been arranged with the photos of NSS activities - special camps, awareness programmes, extension activities, clean and green and plantation programmes etc. Dr. Kola Vijaya Sekhar, Professor, Guntur Medical College  the chief guest, the Guest of Honour, Dr. B. Keerthi, a social activist and another guest,  Sri P. Hari Prasad, NSS P.O made the students aware of innumerable opportunities offered by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India to the NSS students.   • Maris  Stella Alumni Association  organized on 13/09/2019 in the audiovisual room an awareness programme on "Health and Nutrition "in collaboration with Vijayawada Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences for Women , Enikepadu, Vijayawada. Two students, Babita and Pushpalatha of IV D Pharma presented various seminal issues regarding nutrition, diseases caused by their deficiency, precautions to be taken like avoiding  junk food through their PowerPoint. All PG and first year MBA students and MSAA members and the faculty participated in this program conducted. 
    Language Partnership Programme
  • Language Partnership Programme initiated by our Principal, Dr. Sr. Jasintha Quadras and launched with the collaboration of Stella Maris College, Chennai under the able guidance of Dr. Thilagavathi Joseph who  trained the faculty and students in conducting this programme was  taken up this year by the faculty of the department of English.  150 slow learners were identified and 60 volunteers were chosen to help out the slow learners. Every week four hours of instruction and activity were conducted .

19. Online English Course
The Department of English under the guidance of Dr. Girija Nambiar, Dr. Ch. Krishnaveni & Dr. V. Satya Sudha have conducted an Online course in English for all the UG students. The students took one internal assignment in January ’20 and the End Semester exam will be held in March 2020.

Language Partnership Programme was initiated by the Principal, Dr. Sr. Jasintha Quadras and launched with the collaboration of Stella Maris College, Chennai under the able guidance of Dr. Thilagavathi Joseph (English Faculty, Stella Maris College) who trained the faculty and students in conducting this programme. It was taken up this year by the faculty of the Department of English.  150 slow learners of I Degree were identified and 60 volunteers from II years were chosen to help out the slow learners. Every week the students had four hours of instruction and activity. Activities were interactive and participative. Faculty just monitored the Trainers and observed them. Students improved their communication skills and participated enthusiastically. As an incentive, the trainers were given additional 2 marks in the Second Component Internals.

·         English debate was conducted on 11-12-2019 on the topic “Human Consumarism is Resulting in Global Havoc”. 20 students from Inter and UG participated in the competition.    

·         English Essay Writing was conducted on 10-12-2019 on the topic “The threat to the planet is us. Care for the planet and it will take care of you.”86 students from Inter and UG participated in the competition.

Title of the Activity -  Induction Programme

An Induction Programme was conducted for the newly admitted I Degree students on 13/6/19, in the college Auditorium. The objective of the programme was to familiarise the newly admitted Degree students, instil confidence and motivate them towards higher education. Motivational speeches were given by the English faculty, games were conducted to build confidence among the students and to enable them to know each other. Inspirational videos were shown and games were conducted. A skit showing the importance of education was enacted by the students of II BA HEP. 300 I year students, 20 II year students and 10 faculty members of the Department participated in the event. The Freshers felt enthusiastic and responded in a positive manner.

Maris Stella Alumni Association & Department of English together organised a guest lecture for PG English students by Dr. Afeera Khanam, English Instructor, University of Jeddah, Khulais, Saudi Arabia  on the topic ‘Teaching and Learning English as a Second Language: Strategies’ on 31st  July 2019. 75 PG and 56 UG students participated in the programme. The speaker made her session interactive encouraged students to express their views on the lesrning of English.
